Back to Black - Refresh Your Favourite Denim Jacket

Breathe fresh life into your old, worn out favourites with the help of our Back to Black kit. Soon they will be looking good as new!

Time: 1-2 hours

Difficulty: Beginner

What you’ll need:

  • RitDye Back to Black kit
  • Favourite cotton clothing item - denim jackets are a great option!
  • Salt
  • Dish soap
  • Large plastic container for dyeing
  • Measuring cup and spoon
  • Plastic table cover
  • Paper towels
  • Gloves
  • Tongs

How to do it:

  1. Put a plastic cover over the work table. Gather materials.
  2. Prewash a piece of clothing before dyeing it for the best results. Any manufacturer's finishes that can obstruct dye absorption are removed in this way. Leave damp.
  3. Add 3 litres of extremely hot water to the dye container (140F). Note: If the water is not hot enough, add more boiling water to the dye container after heating some water in a cook pot.
  4. Prepare the dye: Pour the dye after shaking the bottle. Put on rubber gloves and add the colour to the water. Then add 1 cup of salt that has been dissolved in 2 cups of hot water to the dye bath. (Salt contributes to the colours intensity.) Then squirt in some dishwashing detergent, and stir thoroughly.
  5. Make sure you are satisfied by testing the dye hue. Dip a paper towel or a piece of white fabric into the dye bath. Add more dye if the colour is too pale.
  6. Wet clothing should be submerged in a dye bath while being constantly stirred for 20 minutes. Move the clothing item up and down and back and forth while wearing rubber gloves. This promotes a uniform colour. For lifting, tongs are also beneficial. Stir occasionally for the next 10 minutes, or until the desired colour is reached (up to one hour). The colour will get darker the longer the clothing stays in the dye water. When dry, colour will seem lighter.
  7. Rit ColorStay Dye Fixative should be applied to jeans and denim right away following dying and before rinsing to help prevent colour bleeding and enhance colour retention. Follow the directions on the packaging. Take the jeans out of the dye bath and squeeze out any extra dye. 3 gallons of hot water should be added to the container, along with 4 tablespoons (or 1/4 cup) of the colour fixative. Immerse the item of clothing in the fixative for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  8. Take off your clothing and rinse them in cold water until the water is clear. After that, rinse and dry your jeans after washing them in a machine with a soft detergent and an old towel. To get rid of extra creases, iron as required.
