Painted Plaid Picnic Blanket

Painted Plaid Picnic Blanket

Every summer needs a (DIY) picnic blanket.

Supplies:

  • Rit Dye Aquamarine & Royal Blue
  • Rit ColorStay Dye Fixative
  • Canvas Drop Cloth
  • Plastic container
  • Hot Water
  • 2" Brush

Time: 1 Hour

Difficulty: Beginner

Instructions:

  1. Wet drop cloth and rinse until water runs clean.
  2. Create a dye bath in a large plastic container with hot water and Rit Dye in Aquamarine.
  3. Add wet dropcloth into the dye bath. Stir occasionally and let sit for about 20 minutes or until desired color. The dropcloth will rinse and dry a bit lighter than the bath. (We went for a pale blue for the base so the stripes would contrast).
  4. Rinse drop cloth in cold water until the water runs clean. Wash on a warm cycle and dry.
  5. Create another dye solution in a darker blue shade than your base. Water must be at least 140 degrees. Create a bit more than you think you might need, this way you don’t run out midway through.
  6. Paint on your stripes! You’ll be using the dye solution almost as if it’s paint. It helps to lay your dropcloth out fully to ensure equal spacing (don’t forget to protect the surface underneath).
  7. Let the dye sit for 30 minutes then repeat the wash process. Add ColorStay fixative to the wash for best results.
  8. Dry and enjoy!
